I can’t believe I’ve never done a post about this. I’m also a little embarrassed that I’m about to do a post about this. If you’re interested in joining me, I’m going to take you on a tour of the newest treasure in my life: an actual snack box.
Recently, I had the occasion to buy a sturdy container to store my snacks. That’s a slightly overly optimistic misstatement. The real story is a very NYC one: I live on the fourth floor of a four-unit building, and after the first-floor tenants moved out with their cat recently, people in lower floors of the building began complaining about mouse sightings. Not us on the fourth floor! Until this week, when I unknowingly removed a mouse from my apartment. (The longer version of this story involves some fancy chocolate, and a bloodcurdling scream (mine).) The very next day I marched into the Container Store to see about protecting the most important food items in my home. MY SNACKS.
And this is what I came home with. I am not ashamed to say I debated between a 19- and 30-quart container, and chose the larger one. I love it.
With everything nestled in nicely and neatly, I realized I’ve amassed a pretty ideal collection of snacks. Of course the contents of a snack stash change week to week. But right now it’s just about perfect.
I always want an assortment of salty and sweet. Among the savory snacks there should always be at least one or two spicy options and then, of course, chips. I’m extra happy when I’ve got Japanese crackers somewhere in the mix. When it comes to sweet, I’m happiest when I have options: chocolate, gummy, cookie and biscuit, and all the better if it’s a combination of the above! If I were to make an ideal snack starter kit, those would be the basic building blocks for me.
This is what’s going on in my snack box today. Those chocolate biscuits are fair trade cookie perfection. The Snack Factory peppermint white chocolate pretzels are 100 times better than the Trader Joe’s version of the same thing because Snack Factory takes care to actually salt their pretzels–key for achieving the salty/sweet mix. The Kettle brand chips are the absolute best version of jalapeno flavored chips out there. Don’t try to persuade me otherwise. The Trader Joe’s truffle chips are a brand new addition and man oh man they are delicious. I’m buying at least a few more bags on my next trip. The Fruition chocolate is from C. I’m waiting for an extra desperate moment to crack into my Fettuccine watermelon soda gummy candies.
And you can’t see it but tucked underneath the sweet potato chips are my most precious treat: chocolate caramel matzo crackers a la Deb, from my sister. I allow myself one a day and they have the power to actually make me cackle with glee they are that good. Am I lucky or am I lucky? It’s okay, I already know the answer!
Happy snacking, friends.
